ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Most of us walk and carry items in our hands every day. These are seemingly simple activities that the majority of us don't question. But an international team of researchers, including Brian Richmond at the George Washington University, have discovered that human bipedalism, or walking upright, may have originated millions of years ago as an adaptation to carrying scarce, high-quality resources. This latest research was published in this month's Current Biology.
The team of researchers from the U.S., England, Japan and Portugal investigated the behavior of modern-day chimpanzees as they competed for food resources, in an effort to understand what ecological settings would lead a large ape -- one that resembles the 6 million-year old ancestor we shared in common with living chimpanzees -- to walk on two legs.
"These chimpanzees provide a model of the ecological conditions under which our earliest ancestors might have begun walking on two legs," said Dr. Richmond, an author of the study and associate professor of anthropology at GW's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. "Something as simple as carrying -- an activity we engage in every day -- may have, under the right conditions, led to upright walking and set our ancestors on a path apart from other apes that ultimately led to the origin of our kind."
The research findings suggest that chimpanzees switch to moving on two limbs instead of four in situations where they need to monopolize a resource, usually because it may not occur in plentiful supply in their habitat, making it hard for them to predict when they will see it again. Standing on two legs allows them to carry much more at one time because it frees up their hands. Over time, intense bursts of bipedal activity may have led to anatomical changes that in turn became the subject of natural selection where competition for food or other resources was strong.
Two studies were conducted by the team in Guinea. The first study was in Kyoto University's "outdoor laboratory" in a natural clearing in Bossou Forest. Researchers allowed the wild chimpanzees access to different combinations of two different types of nut -- the oil palm nut, which is naturally widely available, and the coula nut, which is not. The chimpanzees' behavior was monitored in three situations: (a) when only oil palm nuts were available, (b) when a small number of coula nuts was available, and (c) when coula nuts were the majority available resource.
When the rare coula nuts were available only in small numbers, the chimpanzees transported more at one time. Similarly, when coula nuts were the majority resource, the chimpanzees ignored the oil palm nuts altogether. The chimpanzees regarded the coula nuts as a more highly-prized resource and competed for them more intensely.
In such high-competition settings, the frequency of cases in which the chimpanzees started moving on two legs increased by a factor of four. Not only was it obvious that bipedal movement allowed them to carry more of this precious resource, but also that they were actively trying to move as much as they could in one go by using everything available -- even their mouths.
The second study, by Kimberley Hockings of Oxford Brookes University was a 14-month study of Bossou chimpanzees crop-raiding, a situation in which they have to compete for rare and unpredictable resources. Here, 35 percent of the chimpanzees' activity involved some sort of bipedal movement, and once again, this behavior appeared to be linked to a clear attempt to carry as much as possible at one time.

Leasing and financing your technology allows you to stay ahead of the technology curve; that is to say you are always using the latest technology as it relates to your firms needs.
Businesses that lease and finance their technology needs are often working better within their capital budgets. Simply speaking they can buy more and buy smarter. Many companies that are larger in size have balance sheet issues and ROA (return on assets) issues that are compelling. They must stay within bank credit covenants and are measure often on their ability to generate income on the total level of assets being deployed in the company.
Lease financing allows those firms to address both of those issues. Companies can choose to employ an ' operating lease ' structure for their technology financing. This is more prevalent in larger firms, but works almost equally as well in small organizations. Operating leases are ' off balance sheet '. The firm adopts the stance of using technology, not owning technology. The lessor/lender owns the equipment, and has a stake in the residual value of the technology. The main benefit for the company is that the debt associated with the technology acquisition is not directly held on the balance sheet. This optimizes debt levels and profitability ratios.
At the end of those operating leases, which are usually 36 months long, the customer has the option of:
1. Returning the equipment
2. Buying the equipment ( not likely though )
3. Negotiating an extension of the financing for continued use of the computers, technology, etc.
Companies that have recently acquired computers and technology can in fact negotiate a' sale leaseback ' on those same assets. This financing strategy brings cash back into the company, as the firm has employed a leasing and financing strategy building on our above noted them - using technology, not owning technology.
In summary, the key benefits of computer and technology lease financing are:
* The company can stay ahead of the technology curve
* Computer leasing and financing has significant balance sheet and income statement benefits
* The firm has flexibility with respect to buying new product, returning existing technology, and generating cash flow for purchases already made
Many of the benefits we have discussed relate to leasing in general. However, technology and lease financing are very perfectly suited to the business financing strategy of leasing.

For example, if you weight 180 pounds, you need to eat 360 to 540 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Do not work out for more than an hour. If your body is engaged for more than sixty minutes, then it will start to release cortisol. Cortisol may block testosterone, wasting effort you put toward building your muscle. For best results, keep your workouts under sixty minutes so that you don?t produce excessive amounts of cortisol.
As you now know, meeting your goals depends upon your willingness to listen to your body?s needs. The small amount of time it takes to educate yourself on how to build muscle will be repaid by the reduction in time it takes to meet your goals. This advice was given so that you can reach your goals.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings Wednesday for eastern Oklahoma, much of Arkansas, and parts of western Missouri.?

The heavy rains and flooding are the result of a strong low pressure system that covers the southern US and will continue to push a cold front eastward throughout Wednesday, according to Weather Underground. Flow around this low pressure system pulls warm and moist air in from the Gulf of Mexico and triggers more heavy rain and severe thunderstorms across the Lower Mississippi River Valley and Southeast. This system will continue causing major flooding problems as it moves eastward throughout the day. Rainfall totals are likely to surpass 3 inches in some areas. ?There is a a slight chance that severe thunderstorms will develop over the Southeast on Wednesday. If storms turn severe, expect strong winds, large hail, and possibly a few tornadoes. After the cold front passes, slight cooler temperatures are anticipated. Expect highs to range in the 60s and 70s across the Central US.

I woke up this morning with this feeling that I was trying to pinpoint. I could not figure out if it was fear or frustration, if I was being spoiled and unreasonable, or legitimately concerned about the intrusion of my betrothed husband?s work impeding on my quality time.
As I looked deeper, because you know I take this self-examination thing to the cellular level, I realized what was prompting me to involuntarily fill my eye lids with bite sized water puddles for my eye lashes to dance in.
My sense memory took me back to moments of change in my relationships of old where sudden changes seem to also change the level of commitment of my suitor. There is the ever so egregious clich?? which says that people break up during the spring and summer months, and find someone new for the winter months. More specifically that unwitting banter is usually directed at thick women for the winter months so that men can keep warm.
Here is what I learned about myself this morning. Sometimes, no matter how secure we are in our relationships, things that we have come through will try to cause us to lose our footing. This morning was not a misstep, it was a reminder that I have to continue to examine whether I am responding to situations in fear, or with intuition.
Today?s love lesson is to keep the communication lines open even when it seems like you will be perceived as foolish. I was acting distracted, and even a little short with him. I never want him to feel that I do not honor his work or his efforts so, I called him. I explained my thoughts and guess what?
He understood, reassured me of his love that I never once doubted, and reminded me that he was sensitive to my past and that I could be sweet, or be upset and it would not change his love and commitment to me.
