PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Outfielder Cameron Maybin and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $25 million, five-year contract.

The 24-year-old Maybin was acquired in November 2010 from the Marlins for two relief pitchers. He was selected the team's most valuable player in 2011 after he hit .264 with nine homers and 40 RBIs and stole 40 bases in a career-high 137 games.

The deal announced Saturday deal includes a team option for 2017.

"Cameron has certainly emerged as a core player," general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement. "During his time with the Padres, he has impressed us with his player and with his character. He has shown us that he is committed to the Padres, and we are happy to secure his rights through 2017."

Maybin would have been eligible for arbitration next winter and for free agency after the 2015 season.
