A Day In The Life of a Computer Forensics Student

Hey guys, I decided this week I would chat a bit about my course and what it?s like, cos I?ve seen quite a few people wondering, and even if you are planning to do a completely different course, then hopefully you?ll still find this an interesting read, because I know one of the other Glam InSight Ambassadors secretly wants to be a computer geek, he admitted it to me the other day;) (That would be Johnathon?hi if your reading this mate!).

So first of all ? what is computer forensics in a quite summarised explanation, for those of you that aren?t headed here to study it? Well, a lot of people ask if it?s like CSI stuff with dead bodies and blood spatter but on computers, and in some ways the answer is yes. Everything you do leaves a digital footprint. We can find evidence from phones, iPods, xbox?s, Sat nav?s, computers, and many other digital items. Have you deleted files off your computer recently? Well, they aren?t deleted at all and can easily be recovered by someone in this field.

An increasing number of crimes take place on computers ? some which have transferred from physical crimes to computer crimes such as credit card theft, and some which are new crimes such as hacking. To deal with all this crime, there is a huge need for professionals who can gather information to prove how it happened.

Computer Forensics covers aspects of security, crimes, and evidence. It might be that someone stole your credit card details using their computer, or maybe there?s a virus on your computer which is allowing your computer processing power to be used as part of an attack! It could be that you go into a crime scene and need to remove a computer from the scene and take it to your lab to prove that the owner was is involved in something illegal ? has he been emailing others with information? Does he have media on his computer which proves it? Whatever is there ? you gotta find it!? Might seem a bit crazy, but it happens commonly today, and so we study a wide range of things like this on a day to day basis, learning both how they happen, and how to prove it so that it can be used in court. It?s not always about proving guilty though ? this evidence could prove someone innocent remember!

Is it just a complete geek fest? Nah, not really! It?s more just for people who are interested in crime and security, and also have a love for technology!
