From The Democrat and Chronicle?..
More than five years ago, nearly 40 percent of children in the city were at worrisome weights. The rate in some towns was almost as high.
Then came the time and energy ? not to mention money ? from many parts of the community to reduce the number of children who were overweight or obese.
?Has any of it made a difference?? asked Bonnie DeVinney, vice president and chief program officer of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation.
A new study funded by GRHF aims to answer that question, but another study ? an independent evaluation of the Health Foundation?s signature effort ? won?t be released to the public.
A Democrat and Chronicle report in June raised questions about how much responsibility the foundation holds for sharing information about its programs with the public.
The foundation is contracting with Dr. Stephen Cook, a pediatrician whose initial study showed the scope of the problem. Cook, of Golisano Children?s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will use randomly selected records from pediatrician offices to review the body mass index of nearly 10,000 children ages 2 to 18 in Rochester and elsewhere in the county. The study will cost approximately $100,000 and the report is expected next summer.
At the same time, the private foundation also will be reviewing the components of its own healthy weight initiative, 5-2-1-0 Be a Healthy Hero. The foundation is hiring the Children?s Institute for a five-year evaluation of the program?s strategies ? to increase physical activity and improve nutrition, advocate for change, involve pediatricians and raise awareness.
