I?m 40 years old and have two 401k?s and several IRAs (traditional and ROTH). 401k A sits with Fidelity and the fees are taken care of per my former employer. 401k B sits with John Hancock.
I?m cheap ? let?s get that out of the way? I don?t like fees of any sort, and the less in fees I can pay, obviously, the happier I am. I was always under the impression that Vanguard was the way to go w/ regard to incurring low fees ? and they do have very low fees associated with their mutual funds. However, when I talked with a Fidelity person this morning, she said, ?Why don?t you just roll over both of your 401k?s to Fidelity and not pay any fees?? This assumes I don?t trade individual stocks, which I don?t plan on doing. Is this right? I can transfer both 401k?s to Fidelity, she said to (re)-classify them both as IRAs and I won?t pay ANY fees? When asked how they make money, she replied that the fees they get from those people who trade stocks and other things is how they do it. Odd. She also mentioned that I was locked in to about 20 mutual fund options with my current 401k?s, which is true. They?re a good variety but I?m limited to just those 20 mutual funds. If I were to transfer and (re)-classify, I?d open a wealth of other funds from which to choose to place my investments (which I like). I began the process of converting the smaller 401k to Vanguard today but now am having second thoughts? it goes back to why I would opt to pay Vanguard extremely low fees versus paying Fidelity NO FEES to manage my 401k?s.
One last thing: I have traditionally split everything up to 10% bonds/fixed income, 10% foreign, 20% S&P, 30% Russell 2000 and 25% Large Cap stocks (not exact percentages but you get the idea). Is this a decent allocation? I don?t mind being a bit more aggressive w/ regard to some foreign investments but probably not over 20%.
Any advice is appreciated.
