According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity among children and adolescents in the United States almost has tripled since 1980.
It?s an issue that has affected children and families of all demographics ? some more than others ? and has left health officials and communities questioning what can be done.
The Licking County Health Department?s 2011 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System Report found 33 percent of adults are overweight, with a body mass index between 25 and 29.9, and another 33 percent obese, with a BMI of greater than 30.
An Ohio Department of Health survey of third-graders throughout the state found 33.1 percent in Licking County were overweight or obese in 2004-05; in 2009-10, that number fell to 31.6 percent.
Licking Memorial Hospital is partnering with Newark Advocate Media to improve those statistics with the upcoming Active*Fit campaign.
?(An) issue we felt we needed to actively engage in is educating the youth about the importance of healthy eating and leading an active lifestyle,? said Rob Montagnese, Licking Memorial Health Systems president and CEO.
