Foster the Pets | Everyday People | a mySA.com blog

San Antonio Pets Alive! volunteers Katy Bryant, Renee? Nank, Scott Meenan, Lynn Walker and Charley Sessoms with two of their adopted pets.

Mia and Luna, two?rambunctious, black dogs, romped around owner Blair Salt at her apartment that resembled a playland for pets.

They leaped from the toy-covered floor, laying their paws upon her shoulders as she sat beneath a poster of The Beatles and the logo of The Who fronting a Union Jack flag.

Mia, a border collie mix, lives with Salt, along with a cat she?s named Clark because he ?looks like a nerd, but secretly he?s Superman.?

Luna is one of five dogs and a cat Salt has taken care of since September until they?ve been adopted.?

Salt?s one of the growing number of residents fostering pets to help reduce the City?s animal euthanasia rate.

Animal Care Services credited their efforts with helping the City achieve a 83 percent live-release rate for January, the highest in the city?s history.

More locals are choosing the alternative pet owner option,?offered by?ACS and rescue partners that include San Antonio Pets Alive!, the Humane Society of San Antonio and the Animal Defense League of Texas.

The San Antonio Humane Society, an independent chapter not affiliated with the national organization, promoted Dee Dee Hernandez, a 7-year employee, as its full-time foster care coordinator to offer around-the-clock availability for their fosters.

Hernandez screens applicants and places animals in temporary homes.

Recently several SAPA volunteers?met to talk about their ongoing mission to recruit as many fosters as possible.

Some arrived at Katy Bryant?s office?with pets that included?Allie, a Pit Rhodesian,?and?Ramp, a Labrador someone had tossed?from a car near the ACS campus on Texas 151.

Asked if website photos of pets nearing euthanasia dates?push people to take more animals than they can handle, Nank said the group has a 2-kennel limit so?fosters won?t be overwhelmed.

Bryant said their objective?is? to stay committed to saving as many animals as possible.

?We?re all a piece of the puzzle,? Bryant said. ?Together, we make it work.?
